How To run TIE Fighter Collector’s CD Edition on Windows XP

Started by Jasonp107 · 1 year ago

I originally wrote this how-to for Flicker Gaming, my now-defunct video game blog. Enjoy.

*************

That’s right; it’s possible. I’ve seen it. I’ve done it.

And it’s every bit as glorious as I had hoped.
It’s a great tragedy that the original DOS version of TIE Fighter and its expansions ... Continue reading »

  • You can install TIE fighter and play it using Dosbox which is as of now the easiest yet most complete DOS emulator
  • I know a lot of people like DOSBox and it has worked well. For me VDMSound was the answer - don't know if it was some config issue or what. Regardless - by all means - use what works for you!
  • Solution to error 3 (cannot detect CD), What worked for me:

When you right-click on the file you wish to run with VDMsound, there are two VDMsound options; one with a note-icon and one without. When running tieauto.exe pick the option WITH the note and when running tie.exe pick the one WITHOUT.
If i pick the note-option on both files I get error three, when I do as described above everything works perfectly and it is soooo sweet.

Thank you very much Jason for this Guide, which was an invaluable help to get the game running :-)
  • No problem man, I love this game so much I could never see it go. Thanks for the tip on error 3!
  • Ander's tip doesn't work for me. When I right click on the file to run it with VDMsound, there is only ONE VDMsound option, not two. It is the one WITH the note.

I have the same problem as Craig H. When I browse the directory of VDMsound, there is no file known as "autoexec.vdms". I even tried using the search option to find it. I am wondering if my version of VDMsound is different from yours. Out of curiosity, Jasonp107, what version did you use?

DosBox does not work in the slightest. Error 3 continues to appear for VDMsound even though I have a copy of the CD in the drive. I am starting to get desperate.
    This is my last hope.
  • Never mind. I solved the problem. I posted above how to do it.
  • Thanks Corgan!
  • Anytime.

Now I have another problem. The game runs just fine, but at random intervals during combat mode the monitor will stop working. The monitor will start working again if I leave combat mode.

I am guessing that this problem can be fixed by checking the box labeled "Enable basic VESA support" in my previously posted instructions. But since this makes the game run way too slow, I have decided to just live with the problem.

If anyone finds a way to fix this problem without slowing the game down, it would be greatly appreciated.
  • Hmmmm. The problem seems to have fixed itself.

    Nevermind.
  • I can't seem to get passed it wanting to install directx5.2, even if i say ok it won't let me play the game...
  • Eek, I dunno. That's a new one on me. Let me know if you figure it out!
  • I can't get VDMSound to work. First, I have no "autoexec.bat" file to speak of. And when I try to run the game it tells me to insert the CD...which is already in the drive. I tried DOSbox, but that is slllooooowwwwww as hell, and the resolution is down. Am I just utterly screwed here?
  • Yipes, I'm not really sure what to tell you. You might try redownloading VDMSound since it should come packaged with an autoexec file like the one above. I'd be surprised if the emulation worked without it.
  • Thanks for your help, but I figured it out! If you hit ctrl+F12 a few times, you tell DOSbox to speed up the game. Worked like a charm! Now I can blast Rebel scum out of the sky again, AND it works at the higher res!
  • Awesome! Man I love that game. And they had THRAWN!!
  • Solution to error 3:

After right clicking on TIE.EXE or TIEAUTO.EXE and selecting "Run with VDMS", a configuration wizard will appear.

Select "Set up a custom configuration".

After that select "Create a new configuration from scratch" on the next screen.

On the following screen, click the Advanced button.

    Click the tab titled "Compatibility".

Check the box next to "Enable low-level CD-ROM support".

    Click "Apply".

The problem should now be fixed.

By the way, DO NOT check the box next to "Enable basic VESA support". This will make the game run at a ridiculously slow speed.
  • I can't install on Windows XP.... get an error message "incorrect command procedure" Tried the .exe. Any ideas?
  • Is there a way to increase the mouse sensitivity? Because it takes a lot lifting up the mouse to turn around, it's pretty slow.
  • Playing Tie Fighter with a mouse is about as fun as playing baseball with a bowling ball.

Might I suggest that you play it wth a joystick?
  • For those of you that can't find Autoexe.VDMS

Apparently it become obsolete as there is already one in the win system32 folder.

So in order to have your VDMS with the Autoexe go and download VDMSound 2.0.4
    not VDMSound 2.1.0

    Hope this helps ^.^

    - Zander
  • Thanks Zander, but if you download VDMSOUND 2.1.0, it is entirely unnecessary to alter the Autoexe file.
  • i followed the sound reqs and well no sound :( what do I have to do?
  • For those who have Problems with findig CD-ROM:

    Insert the line

    lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe

in the autoexec field (DOS Environment Tab in Advanced Settings) of VDM. Works perfectly for me.
